Stella Babyfoot
Founded in Paris in 1928 by Auguste Sarraut, Stella is one of France's most established manufacturers of table football games. The company became particularly recognised for its Stella Champion model, introduced in 1948, which became a familiar fixture in French cafés and bars throughout the mid-20th century.
Stella tables are distinguished by their sculptural wooden cabinets, bold colour combinations, steel playing rods and hand-painted football figures. The Champion model combined considered engineering with distinctive aesthetics, introducing innovative playing features including the ability to lift the ball and play using the heads of the figures.
In 1959, the Champion underwent a significant redesign, introducing its characteristic boat-shaped cabinet, angled legs and streamlined profile. The combination of geometric forms, contrasting materials and vibrant colours reflected the playful yet functional approach to French post-war design.
Today, Stella continues to manufacture table football games in northern France. Original mid-century examples are increasingly appreciated as pieces of design-led furniture, valued for their architectural silhouettes, robust construction and distinctive use of colour. Balancing form and function, Stella's designs represent an enduring example of French recreational furniture, equally at home in contemporary interiors as they were in the cafés of mid-century France.
