Beginning his career in furniture design in the 1930s, he embraced modern materials such as metal, glass and plastic, helping to shape the clean, functional aesthetic of post-war French design. Following his service in the French Resistance during the Second World War, Mathieu resumed his career, producing furniture and lighting for major companies including Air France.
