Schwintzer & Gräff

When the Schwintzer & Gräff company launched the first industrially manufactured examples of the famous WG 24 table lamp by Wilhelm Wagenfeld on behalf of the Bauhaus in 1928, the company could already look back on 64 years of history.

The company's beginnings are humble. After his master craftsman's examination as a tinsmith, Carl Eduard August Schwintzer (1836-1911) founded the Schwintzer & Gräff company together with Wilhelm Gräff in 1864 in a residential building at Stallschreiberstrasse 47 (Berlin-Kreuzberg). This is a plot of land that has two inner courtyards and connects to Sebastianstrasse 18, which then becomes the company's headquarters around 1871/1872.

In the spring of 1927, a production contract was signed with Schwintzer & Gräff (Berlin). Schwintzer & Gräff took over the serial production of existing lamp models from the Bauhaus. In 1928, 53 Bauhaus lamp models were produced. The collaboration was short-lived, however, because the contract was terminated in 1930, as evidenced by the minutes of the business committee meeting on April 10, 1930: The contract with Schwintzer & Gräff, Berlin for copying the older lamp models was terminated on September 30, 30. After this point, the Bauhaus has the right to manufacture these types again.
